Deux vagues de cooperation se succedent: la premiere\r\nmarquee par un nombre important d'implantations entre 1900 et 1930 et la seconde\r\ncaracterisee par une ramification dans differents domaines d'activites entre 1930 et 1945.\r\nLe present memoire s'interesse aux bases sociales de ce mouvement, plus particulierement\r\ndans le domaine de la peche, a travers l'etude du membership d'une cooperative.\r\nLa cooperative de pecheurs choisie pour l'etude, celle de Carleton en Gaspesie, nait en\r\n1923. Parce qu'elle n'a pas connu d'eclipse contrairement aux autres cooperatives de\r\npecheurs en Gaspesie lors de la crise economique des annees 1930, divers auteurs se sont\r\nbeaucoup interesses a sa longue histoire. Specialisee dans la peche au saumon, la\r\ncooperative de Carleton met sur pied des 1924 une conserverie qui ne fonctionnera\r\ncependant que quelques annees. En 1932, les Carletonnais beneficient de l'implantation\r\nd'un entrepot frigorifique que Ton appellera plus communement le frigidaire. Les\r\ndecennies 1940 et 1950 sont marquees par l'expansion territoriale de la cooperative et le\r\ndebut de la diversification des ressources. Les annees 1960, 1970 et 1980 sont, quant a\r\nelles, plus difficiles. Le saumon commence a manquer dans la Baie des Chaleurs et des lois\r\nviennent restreindre Pactivite des pecheurs commerciaux de l'espece saumonee. La\r\ncooperative fait faillite en 1989.\r\nSuite a nos lectures, nous avons constate que certaines lacunes etaient apparentes en ce\r\nqui a trait aux connaissances sur les bases sociales de la Cooperative de Pecheurs de\r\nCarleton. En effet, ses membres ne semblent pas avoir fait l'objet d'etudes. Dans une\r\nperspective plus large, peu d'auteurs se sont interesses aux bases sociales de la cooperation\r\nau Quebec. C'est en vue d'elargir les connaissances sur le sujet que nous avons brosse un\r\nportrait des membres de la cooperative de Carleton, en nous penchant sur quatre variables :\r\nl'age, le lieu de residence, le metier et les liens familiaux.\r\nNous avions a notre disposition trois sources d'importance dont deux provenant du\r\nFonds d'archives de la Cooperative de Pecheurs de Carleton : les Proces-verbaux et les\r\nlistes de membres (1923, 1929, 1931 et 1966). S'ajoutent a cela les roles devaluation\r\n(1941, 1947 et 1965-66-67) que nous a fournis la ville de Carleton ainsi que les Registres\r\nde Bona Arsenault sur 1'ensemble des municipalites de la Baie des Chaleurs (une quinzaine\r\nde paroisses). Ces derniers contiennent 1'ensemble des actes concernant les baptemes,\r\nmanages et sepultures d'une paroisse.\r\nNos principaux constats se presentent comme suit. D'abord, nous avons fait ressortir\r\nun vieillissement du membership de la cooperative de Carleton au fil des annees. En ce qui\r\na trait au lieu de residence, nous constatons l'elargissement geographique des actions de la\r\ncooperative sur une partie de la Baie des Chaleurs et ce, plus tot que ce qu'annoncaient nos\r\nlectures. Nous avons remarque qu'une proportion non negligeable de membres exercent d'autres metiers que la peche, dont celui d'agriculteur pour plusieurs, et que par le fait\r\nmeme, le metier de pecheur en parait un d'appoint. Le dernier constat concerne les liens\r\nfamiliaux.
